Networking Tips And Techniques
Good networking skills are essential in every job role. Here are our tips and techniques for getting it right:
Before The Event
- Who is going to be there? Who do I know already?
- Who do I need to spend some catching-up time with?
- Who would I like to meet?
- Who is the host?
- Pack (clean, un-mangled!) business cards
- Have pen handy
At The Event
- Smile
- Make sure you listen to what people say – it’s easy to get distracted.
- If someone is boring you, make your excuses and move on. Don’t stand and stare over their shoulder until you see someone more interesting!
- Remember to exchange cards but do so when it feels comfortable – don’t go foisting your card on everyone in sight
- Look at their card, possibly comment on their division/location/etc. This shows you value their card, rather than stuffing it straight into your wallet or pocket.
- Don’t collect cards like confetti in your pocket. When you nip to the loo, write on the back of the most interesting ones something about your conversation to help you remember which person is which. This will also help you to jog their memory when you contact them again.
After The Event
- Write up your notes as soon as possible. When adding contact names to your database remember to note down at which event you met them and any relevant details.
- If someone tells you to stay in touch then do. Don’t wait for two years until you want something and then do it! A simple email will do; a phone call is better; coffee is better yet. Try to have a reason for your contact, though, even if it’s just an email to let them know your new mobile number.
- Keep your eye on the trade press. Everyone likes to get email saying “saw your article in “Trademag” – it’s about time someone painted a true picture of how the market’s going”. Or “Congrats on your move to Schweff; sounds great. Good luck with it – let me know your new email”.
- Don’t be backward about coming forward, but do be polite and friendly, not pushy.
- Don’t push your luck. Most people are very happy to put you in contact with others or look up a web address or phone number. But don’t ask for too much.
- When you do ask for something, always look enthusiastic rather than needy!
- Give feedback after an event
