When Training Is Not The Answer

Hammer or screwdriver? It’s simple isn’t it? Surely the choice depends on the application? Some fixtures need a nail hammering in, others require a screwed-together solution. In the past few days, I’ve met with two very different businesses; though both facing similar challenges. Their markets are contracting and becoming increasingly commoditised; costs and pricing are the driving factor as the competition becomes more intensified.

It was apparent in talking with these two different businesses that one definitely would benefit from training. For them the opportunity to look at new skills and techniques, knowledge and understanding were going to make a real and immediate difference to their ability to perform more effectively and more competitively. The other business however, as we talked together, became increasingly aware that whilst they too certainly needed to develop their skills, behaviour and understanding through training, there were other factors holding them back. In their case it was obvious they were being limited by absent management and a lack of leadership.

Is this a hammer/screwdriver decision, or maybe it requires an alternative solution like impact adhesive? Or a bit of both – screw and glue! We sometimes need to explore other options when we meet with customers to ensure that they are spending their training budget wisely and doing everything possible to ensure the success of their business, exploring structures, processes, coaching and mentoring, rather than throwing money blindly at a training solution. Sometimes a more strategic intervention is required such as consultancy and expertise from complimentary disciplines to help businesses effectively maximise their commercial opportunities.

Otherwise, as one of my old managers used to say; if the only tool in your tool-box is a hammer – you’ll treat everything as if it’s a nail!
